The Janome Bag Challenge: Warming Hearts by Sewing Together

Last spring Liz Thompson, from Janome Canada, approached Kathy at Snip and Stitch Sewing Centre with the idea to create homemade bags and fill them with an assortment of toiletries. Instantly Kathy, her staff, and customers began creating these bags to be packed and delivered to our women’s shelters and transition houses around Nanaimo and surrounding areas.

The idea is to add various items to the bags in hopes that each bag will be filled for a woman in need to enjoy! The bags can contain any of the following items toothbrush,  toothpaste, travel size shampoos/conditioners, soap, band aides, safety pins, lipstick, mouthwash, nail file, comb, mouth wash, dental floss or any similar items.

Customers got together on Friday Oct. 4th from 10-12 with Liz and created 16 bags. Our
goal by December 1st is to have 100 bags made and filled! We have collected a good assortment of some toiletries but can use  a lot more. We also need sewers. The cosmetic gift bags need to be large enough for a toothbrush. We have two patterns that work great for these bags.

In hopes that we can get more support from the Nanaimo sewing community (thats you!), we have set up Sewing Circle Drop-Ins. Come in to Snip & Stitch to meet some other sewers, while also making a difference and enjoying coffee and goodies!

Sewing Circle Drop-Ins with Cathy Martino:

Monday October 28th  10-12
Wednesday October 30th 10-12

Please call or stop by the store to let us know you are able to come. If you would like to sew from home the patterns will be available for downloading on our website or can be found in the links below.   Also, we have had zippers and batting that have been donated, so drop by so you can use these, if you would like.

Join this sewing movement and make a difference!
